Come celebrate our 3 year anniversary with renowned singer-songwriter and producer extraordinaire M.Ward! Live in the Vines is brought to you by Folktale Winery & KRML Radio.
M. Ward has been a fixture in the Portland folk scene where he’s been creating heart wrenchingly beautiful songs in a city that lends itself to introspection and subtlety. Ward’s prolific solo work is a mixture of folk and blues inspired Americana analog recordings; he has released nine albums since 1999. In addition to his solo work, he is one half of the pop duo She & Him, and folk-rock supergroup Monsters of Folk. He works with many other artists in ongoing recording, producing, and songwriting projects.
Known for his swooning voice and angelic guitar strumming, Ward’s 2003 release, “Transfiguration of Vincent”, caught the attention of fans and future collaborators including Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Jenny Lewis, Neko Case, Cat Power, Gillian Welch and Jim James (My Morning Jacket). Since 2003, Ward has released several critically acclaimed albums such as 2005’s “Transistor Radio” and his breakthrough release “Post–War” from 2007. 2009’s “Hold Time” includes guest performances by Jason Lytle of the band Grandaddy, Lucinda Williams, Tom Hagerman of DeVotchka, and She & Him partner Zooey Deschanel. In 2016 Ward released “More Rain” which features R.E.M’s Peter Buck, k.d. lang, Neko Case, and others, lending the sound of the album a new direction described as “true gotta-stay-indoors, rainy-season record that looks upwards through the weather while reflecting on his past.” Always writing, Ward released his newest project “What a Wonderful Industry” in June of 2018, which takes on a subtler shade of music industry critique by including songs about the heroes and villains he’s encountered over 20 years.
Opening for the evening, we are very excited to welcome back Eva and The Vagabond Tales after their first incredible performance in our wine garden!
From the alleyways of Riverside come the sounds of old world folk-pop that broke free from the early ages of music and skipped through time to find it’s way into our modern world. Along the way, stories were turned into songs, forming “Eva and the Vagabond Tales.” Eva’s music combines western, old folk, and ragtime into a musical melting pot, creating an alluring sound that “transcends time and continents.” Since the start of the project in 2011, Eva & the Vagabond Tales have appeared on LATV’s the Zoo in 2016, and were nominated for the best outdoor video during NPR’s Tiny Desk submissions in 2017. Mikhailovna has also teamed up with artists such as Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks, singing on his 2017 album, “Grim Weepers.” The Vagabond Tales’ music has often been described as nostalgic and close to the heart, and the songs are known for their melancholy, “feel of old Europe”- David Fleming, NPR.
