Great wines are made in the vineyard, and the Ventana Vineyard has the perfect combination of water, soil, climate, art and science to create superb, world-class wines. Ventana is known for its unique planting style and phenomenal Estate wines. This sought after vineyard is owned by a small group of local growers who have lived and worked in the region for generations. It is tended by Steve McIntyre of Monterey Pacific, who has brought innovative sustainable farming practices to the vineyard.
The Ventana Vineyard was planted in 1974. The vineyard was named “Ventana,” Spanish for “window,” because the vineyard lies up against the Ventana Wilderness in Monterey County, but also because it symbolized a “window to the future” in California viticulture. At the time, there were very few vineyards in the area, but today, Monterey has taken its rightful place beside Napa and Sonoma as one of the great wine regions of California.
The Arroyo Seco American Viticultural area (AVA) within Monterey County, California is world-renowned for being one of the best Chardonnay-growing climates, benefiting from the long cool growing season and mid afternoon winds. With over thirty years of awards, Ventana leads the way in defining great Chardonnay by producing a balanced, luscious wine with exotic tropical flavors and enhanced with the finest oak. Pinot Noir is another varietal that flourishes with intense fruit flavors in the cool AVA, delighting the taste buds with a dark cherry essence. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer also excel here.
We apply a mix of Old World winemaking procedures and new proven techniques, adjusting to the artistic perception that we have for each wine, while still allowing the varietal to achieve its fullest expression.
Ventana celebrates over 40 years of winemaking. The first vintage was released in 1978. Since then we have earned the distinction of being the most award-winning single vineyard in America, with wines like the Gold Stripe Chardonnay which was voted Best Chardonnay in America by the Affairs of the Vine. Our Riesling grapes, which we have been growing since the winery was founded in the early 70’s, began winning awards under other winery labels almost as soon as the first planting was harvested.
